Maritime pilots guide cargo ships, passenger vessels, and military ships through the narrow waters of French ports. Both in mainland France and overseas territories, maritime pilots contribute to the safety of ships, crews, and port infrastructures, to environmental protection and to the development of local and national economies.
They are an essential link to the safety of our coastlines and the economic efficiency of maritime transport (over 90% of the goods transported worldwide are carried by sea and river).
In mainland France and all overseas territories, this mission of general interest is carried out 24/7, 365 days a year by 330 maritime pilots and 360 employees spread across 30 autonomous stations.
